This is the third Spring I have visited St. Columba Retreat House. Its located on the Point Reyes Peninsula. I typically take a hike each day somewhere I can hear the waves crashing and see wildlife unseen in Lincoln (elephant seals). There is a historic lighthouse at the very end of the point. Many folks travel the winding roads pass a number of historic farms to come to visit and whale watch for a few moments. There are 300+ steps down to the lighthouse from the visitors center. It usually quite windy and sometimes foggy. The interesting thing about this particular lighthouse is that it no longer is lit. It does still have a loud fog horn that goes every 30 seconds, yet the light no longer is shining. It not due to budget cuts either. A number of years ago it was made automatic but now is dark. The information center states that since so much of our navigational equipment has advanced to include satellites and GPS maps, the light is no longer necessary. Modern day shipping no longer needs lighthouses.

It seems to me that might be said about what many think about the Church today. We have a ton of unique and helpful Bible translations and tools to help us navigate the scriptures. We can listen to a favorite teacher or message via podcast. We have access to so many worship songs through sites like iTunes that we can construct our own personal worship set. We have big and comfortable homes to connect with our friends and host a family BBQ. We even have PayPal to help us give to those charities and compassion projects that personally move us. We can do everything that we do on a Sunday through our homes and the advanced technology of the internet. So who needs Sunday (or Saturday) church? It seems that modern Christians no longer need churches.

Before I respond to this critique, allow yourself to take a few moments and reflect on the question. Why do we need Church? Especially our weekend gatherings?

What do you think?

JUNK: Financial Wreckage

"Check yourself before you wreck yourself." It may sound corny but it is still true. Our willingness and courage to take an inventory on how we are shaped by and how we handle money is an essential part of living free. It does take some serious courage to look at our checkbook, our credit card statement, and our budget. Most likely there is some "junk" that we can get rid of in our financial life. Statistics still show that even in these challenging times, many Americans still do not have an overall budget written down to guide their spending, saving and giving.

We shared a checklist of sorts to see if we are on the road to financial wreckage. When we talk about designing a plan for managing your finances, we offer a course taught called Financial Peace University. This course is taught via DVD by author and radio personality Dave Ramsey and he does a great job of both inspiring and equipping folks. Group discussion follows facilitated by a couple in One Life who have been trained by Dave Ramsey's organization.

Lastly, if we are to be "rich toward God," it naturally follows to examine our pattern of generosity. Dawn and myself have adopted a "three-tired" giving plan. Our first 10% (or more) goes to the local church we serve. We give to the General Budget and beyonfd that to specific needs that arise through the year (compassion/youth/missions). The second tier of giving goes to missionaries, compassion ministries and other Kingdom oriented organizations. Thirdly, we work to live a life that is financially focused enough to give to real individual needs and unexpected tragic situations we hear about along the way. We give in these opportunities anonymously. I call it "sneaky good."

JUNK: Material Stuff

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IVm_V7DUdrk/S5lBIdoTFHI/AAAAAAAAAC4/92tNSKwIEx8/s320/Hangers.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447456837929735282" />
In his book, "Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?" Peter Walsh says there are a number of ways that both our living space and our physical shape are connected. In working as a certified organizational consultant and co-host of TLC's Clean Sweep, he has seen it a hundred times. Our physical health affects our mental well-being, our relationships, our career, our emotional health, and our living space. Cluttered homes often equals overweight bodies. In this way, we see that God has really wired us up as holistic people. Science has already shown us that our emotional health can sap our physical strength. We also know the hurts we carry from our past can sabotage our relationships today.

So, even the simplest action in our living space (material stuff) can actually have a positive affect our an number areas of our life. This past week I simply took out all the hangers that have accumulated in my closet (my side not Dawn's). The picture revels the sheen number of hangers that I have taking up space in my closet. Just removing these gave me a sense of less weight and gives me my next step: remove that clothing that I no longer wear and that can be donated or sold for a God-cause.

We are encouraging everyone in One Life to schedule a garage sale sometime in the next two months and donate the proceeds to our Cambodia Summer Mission Team. A number of One Life youth and young adults will be traveling to Cambodia to work along side AIM, an amazing ministry that fights the human trafficking and sex-slavery of young girls.

Will you get rid of some of your material stuff for your sake and the sake of others?

It might help the "junk in your trunk too"!

JUNK: Tossing the dead weight that keeps us from true life

This series through the season of Lent has the potential to bring anew level of freedom and grace to our lives. We will look at different places in our lives where "junk" has accumulated. These are areas we find ourselves living less because we have more. Ironically if we get rid of the "junk" we will discover a life that is more; more fulfilling, more satisfying, more courageous, more loving, more free, more alive. Easter reminds us that Christ did not stay dead or defeated but rose from the grave to conquer both death and sin. This is resurrected life. This is what we were made for and what Jesus came to bring us.

So, each week there will be a post to remind us, challenge us and help us apply to our lives what we have learned. It's kind of like the "extra features" on a DVD. Consider these Sunday "extras".

Resources for Freedom Sunday

Below are some links to find out more information, investigate companies and products, and take next steps in being an advocate of freedom for those caught in human slavery:

www.notforsalecampaign.org -- Organized Freedom Sunday... lots of info and take action stuff

www.IJM.org -- Info on global justice issues

www.slavefree.com -- Look for brands that are certified slave free

www.chainstorereaction.com -- Allows you to email companies to ask them to institute fair trade practices

www.globalexchangestore.org -- Online store of fair trade

Check out the message and interview with Don Hair here: www.onelifechurch.org/Audio.php

Next steps in facing injustice and slavery

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IVm_V7DUdrk/StZv_PGVuwI/AAAAAAAAACc/AtzWoyK03OI/s320/Justicepath.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392620735998311170" />
Two weeks ago I was invite by my friend Nathan Oates of Emmaus Church Community (also in Lincoln... look collaboration in the same town... I will resist to comment further). It was a really honor to share about our journey as a faith community into the places of injustice, oppression, and need from Cambodia to Lincoln, CA. The context of the interview was primarily around the brokenness of our lives, communities, and systems. This past summer I had the chance to have a front row seat for the heinous, heart-wrenching and soul splaying evil of human trafficking, namely sex slavery of young girls. Many asked after hearing all the brutal and disturbing stories, what can I do. Here's my attempt to answer that here in suburbia.

Dear Emmaus Church Community,
I was deeply blessed and inspired by your willingness to address the uncomfortable and disturbing topic of human trafficking a few weeks back. It is a tragedy that shakes us to our core when we really stop and
realize what is truly wrong with the world (and us). The emotions can be very awkward, raw and somewhat surreal. We do not see often (if ever) this evil up close and when we do it still seems far away from our suburban lives. Yet, for so many around the globe (and even in Sacramento) it is a daily reality. But with all the emotion and even anger, what’s one to do? I mean, really do about these heart-wrenching stories of injustice and abuse? Here’s a few places to begin.
Pray: It’s always the first and best response to the oppression of people. God heard the suffering of His people and it moved Him to action (called Moses out of comfort and hiding to dangerous engagement).
Support: Whether its financial or relational support for those who are on the front lines of this battle. Please check out AIM4Asia.org and International Justice Mission online.
Go: It might be that God is placing a burden on your heart to actually go and work along side these amazing organizations and leaders. Feel free to email me at onelifechurch.org about traveling to Cambodia in summer 2010. Also, I know Emmaus will have global missional opportunities as well. Go for it.
Seek: This is perhaps the hardest and potentially dangerous responses. Read the local communication sources (Lincoln News Messenger, Sacramento Bee), surf online for local and regional issues related to human trafficking and seek a way to get involved. There are local coalitions that seek to be a transformative force in our region.
Share: Tell others about what you are learning and experiencing. Share the move of God in your heart and the restlessness of not being idle as so many are oppressed and used in our world. Who knows God may do a work in their hear and they seek to get involved.

Lastly, Jesus spoke about the “least of these”. He talked about the over-looked, the ignored and the avoided (communities, tribes, or people groups). His heart went out to them, he pursued them, engaged with them and touched them. He even said that the Kingdom was for them. To be like Jesus is to be in the places and with the people he was. You’ll find the life that is truly life (1 Timothy 6:17-19). Our attitudes, addictions, bad habits often trap us from going forward and growing in life. We shared together in a time of surrendering prayer. Kent, penned a Prayer of Surrender, inspired by Paul’s brutally honest confession in Romans 7. Here are the words we prayed aloud together as a faith community:

My Lord and my God, I come to you in my weakness,
knowing that living life my own way leads to destruction.

I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
For what I do is not the good I want to do,
but I keep on doing the very evil I do not want to do.

I ask you now to take my weakness,
pain and brokenness
and replace it with Your
strength, healing and wholeness.

Increase my faith,
and rid me of my pride.

I surrender to Your love.
I surrender to Your grace.
I surrender to Your mercy.
I surrender to Your will.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
Amen.

Don’t just sit there, do something!

But do they walk the talk? Put up or shut up! But what abut the needy, the poor and the under-resourced? These are all question or statements that originate from those of us who are primarily Athletes. Athletes work hard. We have an internal motivation that does not allow idle, lazy or lackadaisical response in life. We live it. We make a difference. We make things happen. If not, who will? We honor God with integrity and we dispel hypocrisy when we act according to our beliefs. Jesus, after all, did not come to be served but to serve. We can rest when we die. That might sound a bit strong but, the desire to help today and not wait until tomorrow is deep in the soul of the Athlete. Much gets done, in the name of Jesus, by those who are willing to get their hands dirty. Truly helping another is enough reward and the soul is strengthened when we do this as often as possible. Do good today. These are the tireless servants among us, until they finally burnout. The tension here is not to either burn out or rust out for Jesus, but to find a rhythm that is effective in the long-run. Sabbath rest are a part of God’s pattern of life. It even shows up in His “Top Ten” (Ex. 20:8). Those of us who primarily engage with God in the tasks of serving and helping have a unique challenge. Can we love God by acts of service and good works alone? No. He recreated us to be sons and daughters not slaves and servants. Our service is to spring from our gratitude for His service to us, namely the sacrifice of His Son. He wants to “be with us” as we go.

Geeks unite or Theology matters

Interesting. Thought-provoking. Intellectually Challenging. If you are the type that reads and listens to great minds and love to think discuss brilliant thoughts, then you might be a Learner. Those of us who respond best to rational and well-presented content truly need the stimulation of mind-stretching reflection and dialogue. We best connect with God when we hear, listen or read concepts that are new or challenging. Theology becomes a source of inspiration. When I hear a well presented case for some aspect or characteristic of our Everlasting God, I actually will cheer aloud. Wow! When we are engage in intelligent and interesting investigation of the Holy, we experience spiritual growth. Nuances of a passage of scripture, a perspective we had not previously seen, and revelation ancient culture, language or history, all help stimulate our connection with our Brilliant God. This does not mean that we fancy ourselves as rocket scientists. We simply enjoy the journey of thinking great thoughts about God. The perhaps, obvious caution here is to not take hold of a prideful position toward those who do not pursue God with their mind. The Pharisees and Sadduccees knew much more about the philosophical and theological underpinnings of our heritage faith than we might ever understand, yet it seems by scripture’s description, they knew Him not. Don’t underestimate the importance of our capacity for emotion that God gave. Jesus wept.

I’m not a fighter, I’m a lover

Warm fuzzies or cold pricklies? That’s the terms I was taught in grade school for my emotions. For those of us who approach our connection to God with our heart, we seek to experience His love, closeness and a deepening intimacy with our Creator and Rescuer. We earnestly desire a sense of relational depth and the genuine emotions that accompany that personal connection with another. Lovers, gauge their relationship with God with emotional language and perceived closeness. The Bible reminds us that God is love and that His primary posture to us is that of a Father longing for the return of his runaway children. Home is where we are meant to be and we are lost and homesick until we return. Mercy, compassion and grace flow from a heart enlarged by an encounter with the Great Heart. Jesus truly died of a broken heart on the cross. The caution here is to not rely on the outward manifestations of a romantic or slightly idealized connection with God. If our emotions are not rallied or heightened when we take time to meet with God in prayer, reading the Word, or journaling, we should not be dismayed or saddened. We need not ride the emotional rollercoaster with Our Father. He never changes and Paul observed, “God is closer than you think.”

Lover, Learner, Athlete – How do I really connect with God?

A few weeks back we talked about how we connect with God. We asked, “what is our preferred and primary spiritual pathway?” How do we really connect with God? This series attempted to release us from false expectations from ourselves and others about how we grow in our personal relationship with God. We often fall captive to what preachers say or friends promote or the newest and hottest Christian living book published. We struggle with a Christian walk that is full of “tips and techniques.” A mentor of mine constantly reminds me that the gospel (good news) is relational not propositional. In other words, its not what you do, it Who you are getting to know. To say it simpler, if at the end of the day we have done some Christian/holy/religious activity but have not had a meaningful encounter with God, nothing happened. Now it would take a month of blogs to investigate the adjective “meaningful” in regards to encounter with God. Let me just say briefly here that it rarely involves goose-bumps and only sometimes an epiphany or “aha” moment. Most of the time it is just being present and putting your heart in a posture of listening. With that said, here’s my take on how many of us could better connect with God. It involves a bit of reflection on how we may have in the past and how we have been wired up by God in our approach to relationships. You can be free to connect with God in a way that is natural, healthy and unique. Do not neglect prayer and reading of scripture, but how you engage in these spritual practices is the key to really connecting with our Triune God; Creator God, Rescuing Son, and Empowering Spirit. Which do you relate to best, Lover, Learner, or Athlete?

Under the mango tree

Under the mango tree is where our church began. Then God provided a small covering with a metal roof and now we have this beautiful building. To you and I we might not see it as beautiful. As Americans we are used to multi-million dollar facilities with gymnasiums and dedicated children's centers. This "building" is a wooden shack on poles (because this area floods annually). THe stairs leading up to the one room are barely wide enough for the ball of your foot.

This small church is led by a gifted and passionate woman who has seen heart ache in their village community. Almost apologetically, she shared how the church is smaller today because so many of their friends and family have moved to Thailand to be day laborers because work is so hard to find. These Cambodians are the illegal day laborers of this region. If there were a Home Depot across the Thai border they would be standing outside hoping to get work so they can eat another day.

We spent time with this gracious congregation singing, praying, playing and making a craft with the numerous children. They shared theirs hearts and a dozen coconuts harvested that morning for our thirsty palates. We left only after laying hands on the core leaders of this village church. I was humbled and encouraged as we saw how God uses the simple places of this world to confound the sophisticated. Praise Jesus for his loving and extending church.

If God does it, it's easy

We arrived in Battambang after a 5 hour bus ride from Phnom Penh. We were warmly greeted by the gracious brothers and sisters at Hope Bible Institute. Christopher Lapel gave us a history and tour of the Institute and we were amazed by what God did in order for this church and facility to exist, here, in Cambodia. Christopher's story alone is amazing, but we will leave that for another post.

But all the while he shared with us how God provided the land, the permit to exist as a church group, the buildings, the electricity, he kept repeating on phrase, "When I try to do it, it's hard; when God dies it, it's easy." They attempted twice to get permission to be a legitimate religious group and it always failed. But, finally after prayer and waiting, God opened a door that only he could and through a former donut shop owner in Long Beach, CA now turned Ministry of Religion; God opened the door and they could officially exist in Cambodia. One of the very few for which this is true.

Maybe, I can learn from them. Pray, seek and then let God do the heavy lifting. He is mighty and can do more than any of us.

Grace and Peace,

Troy

Taipei – Taiwan again (May 22 7:00 AM)

We just landed in Taipei and will take off again soon for Phnom Penh. This Sunday the team will take over a portion of the morning and share about all that God did in them that week. Enjoy!

My heart is so full as I return from One Life's Spring mission trip to SF. The week prior to Easter, our spring break, we took seventeen people, mostly our Jr. and High School youth group to City Crossroads Church located in SF on Mission St., near the Tenderloin, where myself and our youth group taught Vacation Bible Study to inner city kids (ages 5-12) of all cultures for three hours per day, and served food, prayer, and supplies to the homeless who where literally camped and living outside the doors of the church! We slept in the church basement, hearing the sounds of sirens, and people walking and talking at all hours through the night and early morning, truly it is the "City that never sleeps." Amazing times of walking by faith with God, individual growth, play and bonding with each other and with those God brought us into contact with. Our hearts and faith expanded as we were sent out treading on new, and unfamiliar territory for some, including myself as I left all my materials and scripts for teaching and setting up visuals at home, having to rely on God to lead and give me daily creativity to create an interactive bible study each day! Once past the sudden attack of fear and my frantic attempts to retrieve my lost info, I settled into a peaceful reliance that deepened my trust with our gracious, loving Father who IS and has an endless supply of all we need to meet the need. After all it is His Trip! In the midst of what most people would consider, dangerous, dirty, hopeless, hardened, drug and alcohol infested streets, we experienced the love and power of our living God as did those who live daily in these conditions. The darkened streets of the inner city were transformed as God's lights went out and prayerfully walked, prayed, and gave hope. Suddenly, with each step, the ground under our feet became God's loving dwelling place. The names and faces of the homeless and the 26-36 children that came each day were etched in our hearts as precious flowers blooming in the garden of our Lord., I know we all yearn to return soon and reconnect and embrace those He touched and many more. The names and faces of Kyle, Evan, Nave, Alex, Josh, Jake (Terri), Jeremy, Levi, Taylor, Lydia, Sarah, Amanda, Kelsey, and Ellie, were a daily God sighting and source of joy for their fearless, fun, fantastic youth leader Ned Schaut, and we brave, young at heart co laborers Marcia and Cheryl honored to serve alongside this devoted, loving, focused, talented and hard-working sincere team of young Leaders. Praise to God who has caused us to Overcome fear and death, to lose our lives that we may gain it and give it away! We'll Never Be the Same, "You Can Trust Him." Our goal is that we all begin to be much more intentional about being neighborly in our own neighborhoods. If you haven't heard the messages yet, I encourage you to listen to the podcast. We really hope we all will see the street we live on as a mission field, not just a place we live. This could truly transform our community.

As I think about the notion of neighbor, and specifically about how we in the Church at large treat our neighbors, one glaring shortcoming stands out: the way we treat those in the gay community. This was brought to the forefront a couple of weeks ago on the Academy Awards show. No, I'm not talking about Sean Penn. His comments about Prop 8 were no surprise given his outspokenness over the years. What I'm referring to are the comments made by Dustin Lance Black, the young, talented man who won Best Original Screenplay for Milk. As I listened to him accept his award, I noticed the words he spoke did not come out of a Hollywood-left agenda, but rather out of the experience of a life lived as a gay man who has felt far too much hurt and rejection by those who should have shown him love. His plea, as he accepted his award, was to others like him to not forget that God loves you the way you are, no matter what the Church or the government tells you. Ouch. Not a very positive view of the Church. Yes, Dustin comes from a Mormon background, but the truth is that the Evangelical Church is just as guilty for treating the gay community like enemies and outcasts. Whatever your views are on gay marriage, the truth is that because of the battle lines we in the Church have drawn, most in the gay community view evangelical Christians, and perhaps even Jesus Himself, as their enemy. How sad is that.

I believe it is time we take a step back from the war against gay marriage and try and see the bigger picture. I am not asking you to reconsider your view on marriage, nor to cease praying for God's will to be done in our state and country regarding marriage. What I am asking is that we look beyond the community of gays and lesbians and see the individual. Ask yourself the question, "How do my actions help my gay friends, neighbors or family members experience the love of Christ?" For me, far more important than what sort of couple the State recognizes as legally married is the salvation of the individual souls who are in the gay community.

This week the California Supreme Court will be hearing arguments regarding the constitutionality of Prop 8, and I know many of you will be praying about this. My plea is that we spend as much or more time praying that our gay brothers and sisters will come to know the love, forgiveness and acceptance of Jesus, just like the rest of us sinners who call ourselves Christ followers have. And the truth is that they will be much more open to Jesus if his followers were not so afraid of becoming their friends. Maybe we can even love them. Isn't that the neighborly thing to do?

A Do-Over for the Church

In our series, "Do-Over" we have been seeking a second chance in different areas of our lives. From our spiritual life to our finances we all need a another shot to do better. The same goes for the "Church".

One Life is just one of many, many local churches around the world. Each church has its strengths and weaknesses, usually due to key leaders. One Life is no exception. Ask me and others in our church family and we can tell you pretty honesty where God has given us grace to excel and where we need His grace to improve. But, beyond our individual churches, we are a part of a vast movement of churches around the world. When you compile the statistical data (The American Church in Crisis) and poll people for their opinion (UnChristian) you find a certain trend in the results. The American Church is not doing well.

I am not trying to be a "Chicken Little" running around proclaiming doom, but I do want to be honest. I am filled with great hope and anticipation at what our All-knowing God is up to in strengthening and re-directing the Church. Yet, I do feel a sense of duty to call, those of us who choose to make the local church a significant part of our spiritual formation, to address the reality we are faced with today. So here are a few observations I made this last Sunday. I will blog again (with more hope) later this week, so don't go get depressed or get defensive. But, I would like compassionate feedback.

1. World is more skeptical than we want to admit
2. People are more disillusioned than we want to admit
3. Church is more irrelevant than we want to admit
4. Christians are to blame than we want to admit

Because of this we have:

1. A world that is in great need
2. People that are desperate and empty
3. A Church that is preoccupied and shrinking
4. Christians that are distracted and ineffective

Grace and Peace,
Troy

Get Lost in a Good Story

I love a good story. I'm always reading at least two novels at a time, and I'm a sucker for a movie with a good story line. In fact, one of the great things about what we've witnessed this week in America is the story behind the story. In other words, not just the story of the life of Barak Obama, and how he came to be the 44th President of the United States, but the greater story of African Americans in the United States. For in this story we see enslavement, oppression, emancipation and progress, culminating in perhaps the ultimate success: the first African American President. It is a story of struggle, injustice, freedom and empowerment. This is why I shed a few tears as I watched so many people celebrating his inauguration in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial.

Speaking of a good story, I am about to finish reading the Bible from beginning to end. This time I used a different approach, reading the Bible as a narrative. Using The Books Of The Bible: TNIV, (http://www.ibsdirect.com/p-574-tniv-the-books-of-the-bible-tbotb.aspx) I have been reading the Bible as Story. This version is very helpful as it arranges the books in logical and/or chronological order, and it removes chapter and verse designations (which were not in the original texts anyway). By reading Scripture in this format, one is able to read much larger portions at a time and get a sense of the complete Story. I can't recommend this enough. I have read through the entire Bible (including the intertestamental books from a Catholic Bible) in only 6 months. It has been a great experience for me to see the overarching themes throughout the different stories related in Scripture, such as exile and return, sin and repentance, and most of all, God's relentless pursuit of His children whom He loves. It is God's story, a story of love and redemption, and it continues today.

Another recommendation is the book, The Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible by Scot McKnight. (http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Parakeet-Rethinking-Read-Bible/dp/0310284880/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232668722&sr=8-1). This is an extremely thought-provoking book that will challenge you to think through how God intended us to read Scripture. If you're wondering what a parakeet has to do with Scripture, in essence it refers to passages in Scripture that we really don't know what to do with, so we try to tame them and cage them, stripping them of their true context in the big Story. We must remember that each book of the Bible was written in a particular historical context for a specific purpose to a specific people. It is imperative for us in the 21st century to be able to discern what the original context was. In other words, what is the story behind the epistle? or prophetic book? or narrative? To know this is essential for us to discern the "so what?" McKnight proposes that by reading the Bible properly (as Story), "We are summoned by the God who speaks to us in the Bible to listen to God speak, to live out what God directs us to live out, and to discern how to live out the Story in our own day." (pg. 211). That is exactly what should motivate us to read God's word.

So I encourage you to approach the Scriptures a little differently this year. Get lost in a good Story.

Grace and Peace,

Kent

Where's Waldo

Early in ministry I had a friend who was a high school youth minister at the church where I was the College Campus Minister. Jayson, I and a third amigo (the Children's Minister) would tease each other quite brutally. Our desks were in the same small room of a renovated house on the church property. One year, near Jayson's birthday, we decided to take him to Disneyland. Yet this was no ordinary trip to the Magic Kingdom. You see, Jayson looked a lot like Waldo from the Where's Waldo books. Because Jayson was a good sport and we promised to never ever refer to him again as Waldo, he let us disguise him as Waldo. We were not ten feet out of our car in the vast parking lot when a little boy ran up and said, "Look mom, there's Waldo." That's how much he looked like him. That afternoon I laughed so much my side ached for a week. There was even chatter on the security radios that linked the agents in the park. A friend of ours worked security and said that there was an unofficial contest to find Waldo.

It was a blast to have so many folks looking to find our friend, Jayson. But what about finding or pursuing God? I don't believe God is hiding or missing, though, He may often be in disguise. Sometimes God is hard to recognize if we do not have our eyes trained to see Him. The writer's of scripture and worship songs ask God to, "open my eyes."

My question today is: Where are you in relation to God? He is not hiding but are you seeking? My favorite description of the journey to full devotion to Jesus has three phases:

Faith - our initial belief in Jesus Christ and His forgiving and life giving work on the cross.
Conviction - our belief now forms our decisions and determines our values, actions and places to serve in our community.
Consecration - our conviction fully grown now saturates our life. In this phase we are so wholly surrendered to life in Christ that His purposes are ours.

So pause for a moment and ask God to open your eyes and help you see where you are in your faith journey. Where do you want to be found?

Grace and Peace,

Troy

One Life Together

Monologue or dialogue. It is a choice. Do we talk to others or with them? Do we speak and hear or share and listen?

Do you remember "show and tell" in kindergarten?

The first part was to bring something (or someone, favorite pet) and then to share about it with your class. But, most of us forget that the most fun part was getting the follow-up questions from our classmates... If you ever get a chance to experience a show and tell day in a local kindergarten. It will bring deep joy and true laughter to your soul.

That's what this blog is supposed to be. With this new beginning, I hope that this blog will be a collaborative environment for many in the One Life Church community. I invite all to write, share personal stories and uncompleted thoughts. The key element here will be grace. Permission to share without pious judgement and dogmatic argument. Please honor all those who share and comment as it is a courageous thing to participate. Also, for those of us who like to hear ourselves talk (or type). Be courteous and patient as not everyone can fill four web pages (front and back) without taking a breath. Each post will be reviewed for expressing the grace-filled tone and being family-rated.

Jesus Christ of Nazareth is our model. He spoke to all kindly and honestly, yet was never rude or hurtful. Even when speaking with the oppressive political elite or hypocritical religious leaders you almost hear his heart breaking. He said to many, "you are close to the Kingdom of God". Let's pray for one another to experience the revelation of a God who so out-loves every earthly example.

A new Grace and Peace,

Troy

Stumbling Toward God

A number of you requested the quote from Leo Tolstoy from yesterday's message. The context is that even though we are not perfect, sometimes hypocrites, often inconsistent in our living for Jesus, we can still point to the Way of Life that He modeled for us.

Attack me, I do this myself, but attack me rather than the path I follow and which I point out to anyone who asks me where I think it lies. It is less about a formula and more about a shared road of God-experiences. This is not to say that we do not have a plan, its just that the plan is a beginning point. Like a trail head.

A few weeks back I have a week with two of my sons. We do this every few years. I spent the first half of the week with my middle son and then the latter half with the eldest. We went hiking a few days (a different trail with each boy). We found each trail head and started there. Sometime we stayed only on the trial, sometimes we ventured off a bit to get, what we thought, was a better view.

The passage that serves as inspiration is Deut. 6:1-9. It is a picture of a whole life filled by God's good presence, experienced throughout each day in the most ordinary ways. A few of you asked for the short prayer we shared together. Is it simple way to begin each morning individually or as a family. It again finds the inspiration from Deuteronomy:

[4] Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. [5] Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. [6] These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. [7] Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

As you rise, we God and others in your home, join in a prayer of receiving the day:

Thank you God, for this day. I receive it as a gift. This is a one-time opportunity. Help me to live it well. So, this past Sunday we spoke about some of the words we say but often do not know what they mean...

Hallelujah - Boasts of the Lord and His attributes (Hebrew)
Only found in Revelation regarding the worship of God in heaven. Translated “Praise the LORD” in Psalms.

Rev. 19:1 (NIV)
After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting:
"Hallelujah!
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,…

Abba – Intimate and Relational (Aramaic)
Literally, “da-da” as the first sounds a baby usually makes.

Mark 14:35-36 (NLT)
He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. [36] "Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine."

Galatians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." [7] So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

Hosanna – Declaration or a cry for triumphant deliverance (Hebrew)
Asking “Save us” or “help us”: “we pray”. Welcoming the rescue of God from our current trial.

Matthew 21:9 (NIV)
The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
"Hosanna to the Son of David!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Hosanna in the highest!"

Maranatha – Celebrates Christ's coming, His coming again or His Kingdom (Aramaic)
“Come, O LORD” Inviting the Lord to be present and take up the space left by those who are rejecting Him.

1 Cor. 16:22 (NIV)
If anyone does not love the Lord--a curse be on him. Come, O Lord!

1 Cor. 16:22 (Message)
If anyone won't love the Master, throw him out. Make room for the Master!

Amen – Centered on Communion, the Cross, and/or the finished work of Jesus (Hebrew)
“So be it” – “Go for it God!” We agree, believe, and join in Your work.

1 Cor. 16:24 (NIV)
My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Rev. 19:4 (NIV)
The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

"Amen, Hallelujah!"

Grace and Peace,

Troy

Saying "later on"

One of my favorite lines from Kung Fu Panda (yes, I do have 3 boys), is when Panda is making an excuse as to why his abilities may not be up to snuff in front of his highly acclaimed peers. He says, looking at the training dummy he is about to hit, "I just ate, so my Kung Fu may not be as good as... later on." We often do think things will get better "later on."

Jess and Paul are moving to Texas and their imprint on our lives will be long remembered and felt. Yet, we do not have to say, "good bye, forever." We simply say, "later on."

The amazing part about today's technology is that we can actually stay somewhat connected across distances. Even though, its not as real as eating a Carolina's California Burrito together it can be a way to still journey by hearing and reading our current stories. Check out the column to the right or click here for Paul's blog. Check here for pictures of their last Sunday Celebration.

Whether its blogging or Facebook or Twitter, we can stay current, though my favorite is iChat. Yes, I am part geek!

Followers of Jesus deeply believe that at some point in the future we will get to be reunited with friends and family we have been separated from through out life. Because there is so much to still do, I pray that it is, "much later on."

Grace and Peace,

Troy

Sacred Marriage

Today I was a part of an on-line conference discussing the recent law and issues surrounding same-sex marriage. I've played sports most of my life and I totally enjoy athletics.

As a side note, I think I found my second calling. One of my sons was playing baseball on the minor league field last Friday and they asked if anyone wanted to announce the players. I said yes, because this team is AAA and they only get a couple of games on the "big field." I had so much fun introducing the batters and giving them nicknames (a boy name a Chris became "C-Rod"). The players had so much fun hearing their name and the parents cheered loudly when each was announced. I hope this is a part of my chazown!

All of that is to say, that my "in shape-ness" comes primarily when I am challenged on a field or in an arena, not from a gym. I need others to challenge me to do my best, to give it my all and to have a prize at the end of the battle. There does not even need to be a score kept (not any longer) but that prize can simply be to have done my best and have a few exploits to be proud of. I realize that I need others to push and sharpen me along the way or I can get lethargic and rely on my past performance.

What we have been discussing the past few weeks, is like that. If we are to pursue God's best, His "chazown" or vision for life, then we will need others to challenge and inspire us. We need others to live boldly and take risks so that we do not remain where we are but stretch and reach as God directs. Each week, be sure to take advantage of the journal page each and use it to discover the way God has shaped you for your unique chazown. He is leading and challenging you to pursue it with your best! This can be one of the most inspiring and fulfilling seasons of your life. You can find the message notes and Chazown journal page here.

"I didn’t go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity." C. S. Lewis, God in the Dock

Grace and peace,

Troy

BTW, this series is inspired by the book Chazown, by pastor and author Craig Groeschel. But, how can we? A recent article observed that Americans are trying to cram 31 hours of living into 24 hours. Anyone remember the square peg and round hole problem?

I know I can be as guilty as others on this one... pastor, husband, dad of three boys (all on separate little league teams), community volunteer, trying to keep in shape (preferrably not an avocado shape)... I can definitely push the edge of my time and energy levels to try to get it all in... yet, a few years back I began to get a sense of what helped me stay focused, energized and fully present to those I was with. I call these my core practices or re-creation rituals. They help to re-create God's life in me. When I get these right, I can see a dramatic difference in my capacity for life and ministry. I pray and hope these can be a help to you as you discover your recreation rituals:

1. Sit somewhere quiet - spend intentional time in stilling my soul with God (can include scripture meditation and listening prayer. Anyplace near water works for me (river, stream, lake, pond, ocean).
2. Read something fun - take time to read a magazine, novel, or site that is fully for fun. No need for research or preparation for teaching. WIRED is one of my current favorite periodicals.
3. Fix something up - actually fix something that needs repair or replace something broken or assemble something new. Ministry is about people and you do not 'fix' people. Believe it or not, they actually resist it if they think you are trying to! Cleaning the garage or installing a closet organizer is therapeutic to me.
4. Sweat something out - the need for athletic activity and physical fitness is core to my being. Riding 20 miles in the Tour de Lincoln, playing in a pick up game of soccer, or throwing a baseball with my boys really goes miles in refilling my tank.

What are your re-creation rituals? My two oldest decide on their own to choose to be baptized as followers of Jesus. They state their desires and convictions to receive Him and follow His way. As I was praying for the gathering that morning, It struck me what these young hearts were choosing to do. I am humbled that through my inconsistent and often contrary life they still see Jesus well. Ouch! Thanks to so many of you for the positive and kind words about this past Sundays conversation. Here's some "other" thoughts.

The unique "chazown" (Hebrew for "vision") of One Life Church is a longing, a yearning and a leaning/leading more than a mission objective. I has to come to us and engage us and draw us from a deeper well than simply an intellectual and cognitive agreement or persuasion. It begins with an "aha moment" or a few of them that reveal to us that there is something missing, something amiss, or even worse, a dis-ease that is affecting us and others. When we are still enough to be aware, we see that the whole world has been infected. The long-term prognosis does not look good. What can we do? Is there anyone bright enough or brave enough to lead the way? Do they have a viable and real solution?

There is One who was bright enough to see the real problem and prescribe the ultimate way for healing and health. He is One who brings hope and help. Jesus of Nazareth lived as the Truth, the Way and the Life before all who witnessed his beautiful and rescuing life.

What "way" did He live, model and boldly proclaim? Three words that describe this way: re-creation, communitas, and missio dei.
They are taught and injected into the disciples (read "apprentices") in the book of John in chapter 15. This "way" is simple, uncluttered and vast. Yet, is left unexplored by most, even those who claim to follow the Way. How hungry are you? How deep your longing? Do you yearn for a better and healthier way? Pursue Him will all you have.

Grace and Peace,

Troy

Prayer of Interruption

Many of you have asked for a copy of the prayer we shared together on Sunday. Most of us need things told to us straight. Explained a fully as possible. And even a second or third time. It is a rare time that I see the subtley of a truth clothed in a some common way. I probably miss much of what God is doing in and around me because of my own self-imposed blinders. I have tunnel vision for my own agenda. Because of this I miss the interconnectedness of God's Kingdom work.

Example: I tried something yesterday in our Sunday service. The message was open ended. Not 5 steps to freedom. Or a simple next step application. Not an easy tied together ending. Rather a question: Do you have a chazown (vision) from God that pulls you into life with Him and His Kingdom reality. Do you (we) live each day pursuing and engaging in that purposeful and soul-satisfying adventure?

The natural question I have is, "What does it look like?" The obvious answer is, "Jesus". When we examine and watch his life as recorded in the Gospel accounts, we find a life that is beautiful, challenging and tragic. How could a human live this way so intently and consistently. There is a mystery and open-ended-ness to the Way of Jesus. It is simple but not simplistic. Jesus invited those to really see what He was inviting us into, yet not so explicitly. It was somewhat enigmatic, cryptic, and cloaked.

But here's what we did see yesterday is our gathering was two examples of what it can look like:
First, the personal story of a young adult who went from home schooled Christian family to meth-addict and intravenous drug user to clean and sober Christ follower again. A real miracle and testimony to the work of God in our darkness and most self-destructive times. True Life redeemed and restored.

Second, a family offering and committing themselves and their child to God. Its picture of open hands and a hope-filled imagination for the future. Its a vision of what can be. Yet, in the first picture there was likely the same offering and commitment from the parents of the young adult. See the mystery? Can we hold the quandary and puzzle and the promise and hope in the same hand? I suspect it is a part of the 'chazown'.

Grace and peace,

Troy

A long passionate obedience in the same direction

There is a book written by Eugene Peterson called, 'a long obedience in the same direction'. I admit to having only read the first couple of chapters. It was written almost 20 years ago and, yet, could have been written yesterday. Here's a favorite exerpt:

It is not difficult in [our] world to get a person interested in the message of the gospel; it is terribly difficult to sustain interest... There is a great market for religious experience in our world; there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of virtue, little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called holiness. (pg. 12)

So, life this side of Easter... Take a moment. A deep breath. Let it out slowly. A quick pause. Sit still. A silent minute. Slow your breathing pattern. Close your eyes. Ok, you have to open them the read the rest... No, really, go ahead and practice the last few bold face sentences, you are just sitting in front of a computer screen... capture the space for this to really sink in.

Now, imagine life this side of Easter. Death has lost its sting. Sin has been rendered powerless. Grace flows in huge waves. Faith is sustained by deep wells. Joy is a constant friend. Courage comes quickly and when needed. The new life of resurrection is real, authentic and today. It is a genuine return to the garden scene of Eden. We get to re-live with God the life He originally imagined, created and intended. This is true and a reality promised by God, through Christ, in the Holy Spirit.

What's missing? Is there perhaps a quality of life that is conspicuously absent in your life now? It there perhaps a conspiracy (II do believe a few real ones exist) that is being waged against such a life described above. That's the tension I want to address for the 40 plus days (our Easter 8 are already past). Hint: part of the answer is hidden in the word, "chazown".

Grace and peace,

Troy

The days after Easter

Wow, spring break really go to me. I totally got out of the rhythm of writing. So I'll do two this week. 1) for Easter reflections 2) for this week and the upcoming series. So here's numero uno:

Resurrection Sunday is supposed to be this huge crescendo in our communal celebration of the passion of Christ. I don;t know how many of you saw the movie created by Mel Gibson a number of years ago. I saw it early on in its release to the theaters. I watched with a big crowd of others in silence, tears and sometimes in horror as Jesus of Nazareth was falsely arrested, paraded from crooked politicians to ill-religious leaders for their own agenda. Yet, on this past Good Friday we spent time experiencing the stations of the cross where we take personal responsibility for the sacrificial death of Christ. It may have been the conspiracy of the Romans and Pharisees that in reality put Jesus on that torturous cross, but it was our sin that lead Him and motivated Him to fulfill the law and extend forgiveness and live eternal for a sinner like me.

Back to Resurrection Sunday... According to Biblical scholars Easter was celebrated for another 8 days after Resurrection Sunday. Yet, for most of us we walk through the season of Lent and crescendo with Easter then... nothing. The truth is that we should revel in the amazing new life we are offered in Christ's victory over the grave. Also, after 8 crazy days of Easter, the church continued the festive attitude for another 42 days until the celebration of Pentecost (Acts 1).

I still want and earnestly desire to live not only free from the power of sin, but more radically in newness of life. What does a post resurrection life in Christ really look like, feel like, move like? I think I have touched the hem of His garment at times (a thimble full). But, yet, I have not experienced that consistent and constant, "faucet wide open" flow of the living water from my deepest inner being. My suggestion: let's continue in an attitude of awe and joy through the next 50 days and see if the power and freedom of Easter will soak deep into our hearts and minds. Kind of an Easter marinade (OK that was corny).

That is what I am obsessing about, this side of this particular Easter. That is what I want to investigate and chase after for the next 50 or so days.

Grace and Peace,

Troy

Pain, real pain

Hey All-- I am writing this blog not so much as extras this week but as an apology (if that's appropriate). I spoke this past Sunday on the challenge of suffering, difficulty and pain that we navigate through in life. It was a lot of content and even with the interview with Jess (way to go Jess!), it may have come across too unrealistic. A young woman emailed in response that it had some gaps and missed being real about the grief, loss and emotional pain that can accompany the tragic experiences in this life. I in no way wanted to gloss over and ignore those very real emotions in the midst of loss. I know in my life that depression, guilt and confusion have all been my companions at times. I was concerned that I would not be able to teach the content on the redemptive side of pain and adequately address the sometimes dark journey of pain and loss. I am sorry to not also include that part of the journey. We have spoken about that in the past and will not fail to in the future.

In addition, I know that if any of you need someone to simply share with about the reoccurring and unrelenting pain or sorrow that in a promised part to this life (Ecclesiates 3), that there are those who would lovingly and gently sit with you. Please do not hesitate to call or ask. I also know that Jesus himself cares and can bring comfort when nothing or no one else can. He is available and ready to listen.

Thank you to those of you who honesty and courageously shared the very real pain that you have experienced in this life and how God has held, sustained and even deepened your faith in the midst. Thank you for all the encouraging words and challenge that is a part of being a community of faith together.

Grace and peace,

Troy

Jesus, the Ace

There are always presuppositions in our thinking. We always begin with some sort of data, concept, or opinion. We may hold these loosely at times or they may hold us so strongly we can not even recognize them. The key to wisdom and good scholarship (especially in handling the Bible, accurately) is to be aware of our own and ask for wisdom from God to discern from others, theirs.

For many, statements like these could be a key to understanding their presuppositions (in parenthesis):
• The Bible is the Word of God (to be taken literally at all times)
• The Bible is the Word of God (to be studied and understood in its original authors context)
• The Bible is the Word of God (as a historical document and handled as a literary text)
• The Bible is the Word of God (it is mysterious and holy and can only be understood with divine guidance)
• The Bible is the Word of God (it is God's letter of love to me and the world)

The Bible can be some or most of these things. Yet, I have to admit my particular presupposition. Jesus is the Word of God made visible and real. My own preference to approaching the Bible as God's revelation is that it points to a true north as a compass is designed to do. Jesus becomes the lens or filter through which we understand and interpret scripture. There are many passages to quote for this stance but the first chapter of John is by far my favorite. No matter what I think scripture is teaching I have to first filter it through the life and teaching of Christ. I may not understand a specific teaching or command from Paul until I do the hard work of weighing it upon the very real example that Jesus gave us in his life. Jesus' ace high trumps Paul's king high hand every time (even though when we study Paul, I see more and more how he is just underscoring Jesus ).

Here's the bonus, and very vulnerable confession: I believe a lot of what Jesus was doing in his teaching and embodying the Kingdom of God was unhooking us (and those of his day) from our own finely held presuppositions that did not reflect what He was here to ultimately do. (two examples: Matthew 13:13-16 & Matthew 15:1-20 & Matthew 16:19-30) They had (and we still do) create tidy boxes in which God is to live and operate. Jesus was by far the most extraordinary person to ever live and also the most controversial and dangerous (for our theologies). Jesus was constantly creating discontinuity in the minds of His hearers.

The best I can do is to submit my ideas to Him and His life. "Lord, help me to let go and trust in your manifold wisdom revealed in your Son, was and is the Way, the Truth and the Life." Amen.

Grace and Peace,

Troy

On hearing God's voice

Today we looked at a passage (Matthew 17:1-8) that revealed how Jesus receives the baton from Moses and Elijah (the Law and Prophets) as God's central redeeming and guiding force. As Jesus is transformed his eternal and divine identity is revealed in front of his three closest students, God's voice from heaven is audible and profound. It is not often that God's speaks so that all around can hear his voice during Jesus' life on earth. So, wouldn't it be nice if we would get to hear God's voice audibly, publicly, at crucial times in our life? God does speak and He is able to be heard. He declares on that day in front of Peter, John and James, that His desire is that we "listen to Him". Yet, there does seem to be much confusion around hearing God's voice and following His direction.

So, here's some observations (from Dallas Willard's book, Hearing God) that can clear up misperceptions around hearing the voice of God.

1) Message-a-Minute. In this misperception, God is telling us at each moment what we are to do each step of the way. Many speak as if God is always talking to them, almost without break. Scripture does not support this picture. While many of his leaders and apostles did have a deep sense of mission and purpose, and at times hear directly from an encounter with God, we do not find them receiving constant communications from God.

2) Its' All in the Bible. This misunderstanding says that all we need to know is in the Bible. While much guidance is there, the Bible was not intended to give you the answer to everyday questions, like what hour to get up in the morning or whom to marry. With that said, we do have the necessary principles to live a life like Jesus. Contrary to what some may believe, I do not receive direct revelation from God on every topic and message to teach. I simply listen for God's direction as I read, interact with others in our church and local community, commit to time in prayer, and then share what I have come to believe is what's most helpful and life forming. God's will is clear on many issues in scripture and those general principles are to be applied by personal divine guidance in the unique circumstances we find ourselves in today.

3) Whatever Comes. This view incorrectly asserts that every circumstance as guidance from God. Unfortunately, even if it seems like we are trusting fully in God's sovereign leadership, we miss out on His personal interaction with us. Many things that happen in this life are not the will of God. He can do no evil or injustice. His heart breaks at much of what happens to those without power and resources in our world. It is, though, God's will that his people do not sit idly by and watch others suffer cruelty or abuse. We have a crucial part to play in His Kingdom work being experienced.

Dallas ends these observations with a helpful illustration. I will share it from my own experience. I get to be the dad of three amazing, energetic and bright boys. These guys remind me that God is gracious, generous and patient with me. Parenting if you get to participate, is indeed intended for our spiritual formation. That's for another blog. But, I try as best as I can, through God's guidance and my personality to share direction and wisdom with my boys. They are young still and I give them tons of advice and direction (perhaps too much). They are good guys and listen and respond well most of the time. But, I know that the true test of their understanding and reception of my leadership will be later in life when I am not there personally to say what to do next. Maturity, then, will not be linked to my present and direct speaking but how they now apply the teaching and guidance I have tried to share along the way. The true measure will be when I do not speak, am silent and not within ear shot.

I know this is a long one. Thanks for hanging in there and finishing. If I have been unclear on any of these points, I would like the opportunity to clarify. Or better yet, pick up a copy of Willard's book and read it in the proper context. Please receive, reflect and come to your convictions regarding these observations. As always, if you have any comments, questions or additional insights, send them along.

Grace and Peace,
Troy

Walk with...

Overlooked. Avoided. Ignored. Shut-out. How would you feel if most of your life you were treated that way. Often in an America that emphasis success and financial strength we avoid anything or anyone that reminds us that resources are not distributed equally. The way of Jesus is not a look-out for number one and take care of self to the exclusion of others. Rather it is a life that understands what we have is to be managed or stewarded for not just our sake but also for the sake of others. It is a way of life that is "rich toward God". In Luke 12:13-21, we find strong words toward a financially successful business man who holds and hoards his wealth for himself. God calls this foolish. Here are my questions:

• What does it look like to be "rich toward God"?
• How would you know if someone was "rich toward God"?
• If our giving is supposed to be "done in secret" (Matt. 6:1-4) then how do we encourage others or be a model for living different in a "fools" world.
• Is there a balance between taking care of our families and being generous toward the less-resourced?
• Jesus commends a servant who "invests" his talent (form of currency), so is investing for the future OK?
• How much is too much to hoard versus investing for the future or in His Kingdom work?
• At what point am I holding onto resources too long that need to be leveraged for others, especially the poor?
• If I give away resources that can be multiplied (by being invested or grown), am I missing a strategic opportunity in the Kingdom?
• What if we became a community that began to walk with those who are less-resourced?
• What if we stopped avoiding but actually engaged in helping those on the margins of our society financially?

Who are those who are most on God's heart? Check out Deut. 24:19-22 and James 1:27.

Share your thoughts, your questions and your next steps.

Grace and Peace,
Troy

Ruined by disturbing grace

This past Sunday we looked at two passages: Phil 3:7-11 and John 8:2-12. We will look more at the Philippians passage in coming weeks. The John passage shares the story of the religious leaders of Jesus' day trying to trap him in a theological maze and ruin his reputation as a good teacher. They are also hoping to dislodge him as the central prophet role he is holding at that time. A woman is caught in the very act of adultery and paraded in front of Jesus to determine her fate.

Should she be stoned (thrown rocks at until she is dead) as the Law of Moses declares?
Or should she be released (some zealous God-honoring prophet Jesus would be if he is easy on sin)?

The thinking I have from my study comes mostly as questions. here are a few for you to ponder, struggle with and find other interpretations on:

• Where is the man who was also caught in adultery?
• Who caught her and what were they doing spying (voyeur) on them?
• When was the last time someone was publicly stoned in this town?
• What does Jesus write in the sand/ground?
• Is it the same thing each time or does he change his scribbling?
• Why does the crowd not react the first time around to the scribbling?
• What would Jesus write that is in line with his character and teaching and manner of dealing with sin that we've already seen in scripture?
• Why do the oldest leave first?
• What would I have done if I were in the crowd? Why?
• What does Jesus treatment of this woman say about God's heart and what grace truly means?
• How am I disturbed by this extension of grace to someone who obviously chose to sin?
• What does Jesus' words, "leave your life of sin", say about grace?
• Why does he not say, "stop your adultery"?

I'll leave those questions for you to ponder and meditate on.

Grace and peace,
Troy

Lenten Series

Bloggin' again. This revived blog will follow our Lenten teaching series: Ruined. I will share thoughts, Biblical passages and miscellaneous insights from prayer, research and writing. Here's the series introduction (the same can be found at our church's web site):

I’ve always loved pizza. I call it the perfect food. All 5 food groups are represented in a pepperoni pizza! Growing up any pizza would do; Pizza Hut, Shakey’s or Domino’s. But something changed in High School. I started working at an Italian restaurant called Brooklyn Pizza Works. It was voted the best pizza in Orange County for three years while I was there. The secret was in the crust. Big Vinnie (owner) ruined me. He ruined me by exposing me to a pizza of such high quality, every other pizza paled in comparison. I could no longer go back and eat the other guys’ pizzas with any enjoyment. I had been ruined on something better. The writers of scripture describe the same thing with Jesus Christ. Having been introduced to another way of living life with God, having experienced life with Jesus and walking with Him through the Holy Spirit, every other pursuit in life seemed like garbage. They were ruined on any other version of religion. Compared with knowing Jesus and experiencing life with Him, everything else simply would not do. Why would we go back to living and feasting on a cheap substitute? Yet, we still do. This Lenten series will help us re-examine and reflect on what we have been luxuriously given in Jesus. Let’s be ruined together.

Peace be with you,

Troy

June 26, 2006
Anglong Veng

Whew. What a whirlwind the last few days have been. I’ll have to add up all the kilometers of travel. How many kilometers of dirt and muddy roads? How many wooden and weathered bridges? How many hectors of jungle forest? How many muddy trails on the back of a dirt bike? I do not know but the people we met on the way were so welcoming and gracious, I am truly humbled. We drove all day to get near the last church building we helped dedicate yesterday. It is the first we’ve built on stilts. The area is very remote and floods so it was built about 6-8 feet off the ground. I’ll attached photos when I get back in the states. The church is fortunate because the Red Cross placed a high quality well with pump right next to the property. I have so enjoyed the time here teaching and sharing life together with these dear brothers and sisters in Christ. I was handed two letters of thanks from church leaders. In their words, they were “blessed” and were “inspired” by the “passionate” teaching they received. They sent gracious prayers and thankfulness and blessing to you all who are connected to this work. Thank you for your dedication to the kingdom of God and the beautiful people here in Cambodia.

Battambang, Cambodia

June 21, 2006

Hello all-- First of all, “Thank you” to all of you who have sent such encouraging words regarding this mission to Cambodia. Thank you for the support in both prayer and finances.

God has been very real in his blessing so far. Travel was safe and continues to go well. Even riding double on the back of a motor bike through muddy roads without a helmet and in sandals. Hold on tight! The people continue to amaze me. Their commitment to Christ, love for one another, and compassion for others is inspiring. Many live in desperate situations. Food is difficult and work even more scare in the villages. One young house church leader shared that some families in his village do not have enough rice from their own fields to last through the rainy season. Some even go days without food, and it breaks his heart when the children go hungry. Some move to Thailand to find work to support their family.

The Bible Institute is beautiful. Three new buildings were completed this year. Two are for housing (men and women) and another with 4 classrooms, a library and office space. Rainwater is recycled from the buildings into a water reservoir. A new kitchen was also constructed to feed the church leaders as they come for training twice a year. Teaching Galatians and James has been a challenge (how do you translate a goofy sense of humor?) and yet an immense joy. I learn so much from these church leaders and thoroughly enjoy the interaction and discussions. The library of yet is empty. So few Bible reference books or commentaries have been translated into the Cambodian language. I would love for us to find ways to get learning resources for these hungry pastors and leaders. It might be that provide technology so they can record the teachers on CD, as they come, so they can listen to the instruction whenever they need.

Many of you know Don and Bridget Brewster. They are pioneering work in Phnom Penh in the areas of justice and compassion in ministering to young girls trapped in the commercial sex trade (prostitution). We will be able to partner with AIM as they provide housing, care, rehabilitation and vocational training for girls rescued from life on the streets.

If you are still sending in financial support, it will go to some immediate needs we’ve discovered while here. There is a village church that we just dedicated last Sunday that needs to complete a clean water well. The property was purchased with a well dug and casting built but it needs to be drilled deeper and a pump installed. It can be completed for as little as $200 and a high quality pump purchased for around $1000. This well can provide water for this village in the name of Christ.

I will upload pictures as I can this page. If not, check back later.

Miss you all and you are in our prayers.

Preah Protem Po (God bless you),

Troy

Taipei – Taiwan

Taipei – Taiwan

June 15, 2006
Arrived 10 PM after an 11-hour flight. Five (5) random movies and airplane food can send anyone into a travel coma. I got to the Chaing-Shei Check airport and promptly got a hotel room for the night. I tried to set my internal clock for South East Asia, but a greater voice prevailed. About 4 AM I awoke to watch Germany defeat Poland 1-0 in literally the final minute. No need for translation, I am stoked that the rest of the world will air the games whenever they are played. I am trying to update my blog from Starbucks in this airport. Scary, that their reach is so vast, but thankful for the wireless connection. Props also go to T-mobile for the Wi-Fi. I am excited today to meet with Don B. with Agape International Mission. I hope to find out how One Life can partner in rescuing, restoring and empowering young girls rescued from the commercial sex trade. God’s heart beats for the opposed, under-represented, and marginalized of our world. After all Jesus did come to see and saved that which was lost. Lost means, “I noticed it’s missing.” If we go to Disneyland as a family and I notice that one of my children is missing. I will go on an all out search to find him. I will also never give up and relentlessly pursue my son until we are together again. My love for him compels me to not rest until he is home. My love declares that my son is of great value. When Jesus states that He came to seek the lost, it is a declaration of great love and a commitment to bring us together again. May this journey be one fueled by the love of Christ revealed in His life and shown profoundly in the cross.

Where ever you go, there you are

Happy New Year! It has been quite a ride in 2005 for the Dean clan. Many of you have been so encouraging and supportive as we have been walking through the biggest transition of our lives. Planting University Praise almost 8 years ago seems (at this place) so much easier than this past year. Many of you have been pursuing us and asking us in your own words, “what happened to you guys? And “where did you go?” Some of you we have missed the opportunity to journey with these past months and maybe surprised by this update.

As quoted from one of my favorite characters, from one of my most favorite movies; Inigo Montoya replies, “It’s too much, I must sum up.” So, here it goes. We have left UP in Southern California and now reside and minister as a part of a community of faith in Northern California called One Life Church. We have moved our family and our stuff from Fullerton to Lincoln. In many ways it represents a new season in our life as a family but also for me in ministry. During the space between leaving and grieving UP, we shared in life, conversations and interviews with a number of churches and ministries. We met many new friends and experienced a depth of relationship for which I am truly grateful.

My heart and vision for the church was expanded and enlarged. One advantage to being unemployed and somewhat nomadic was to experience so much more of what God is doing “over there”. I was blessed by such a variety of experiences as I worshipped and shared in community with brand new church plants of 20-30 to large churches of 4,000 or more. What a diversity and what creativity and beauty exists in the Body of Christ scattered all over. Our family had the joy of being a part of a new church community in North Orange County during our in between time. NewSong Church (NOC) was a deep blessing to us, and a few friends and family members. What a great community of faith, gracious leaders and wonderfully creative and devoted servants. Our kids were loved and ministered to in this beautifully diverse family.

OK. I know the real question. Why did the OC born and bred Deans leave So. Cal. and move all the way to Lincoln, CA. You probably won’t believe the answer but here it goes. I am not sure. It’s not that I am unsure, its just that there is no easy or pretty way to say that we were led by God without it coming across somewhat shallow. We do know this: God connected us with a special group of people (some staff and many that are a part of the community) that simply and profoundly communicated love and grace to us. They welcomed us into their lives and their hearts. The authenticity and freedom we discovered being among them was and is so attractive. They affirmed and invited us to bring who we are and our unique blend of gifting and passion to this three years young church plant. Their way of life and devotion being a church community inspired and wooed us to this out-of-the-way place. Don’t get me wrong. Its not a rural community but it is not urban or metropolitan. It is beautifully simple and yet profoundly progressive community walking a transition of its own. Lincoln was one of the fastest growing cities in California the past few years, on pace with the entire region around Sacramento. It has this unique mix of both traditional and native Lincolnites and a new breed of transplants from the bay area that are seeking a new life (and affordable housing) for their families.

Dawn felt the call perhaps even more strongly that I at the offer. The boys had a fantastic time visiting and they constantly talked about it. After we accepted the call to come to One Life, the boys’ prayers to Jesus expressed both gratefulness and a hope for something better. During our search for a new house, they would pray, “Thank you God that we have a new church, and daddy has a new job and that he likes the one with the pool.”

We have been very busy since I came up in November and we made the final trek as a family when school let out for the Christmas break. We worshipped together for the first time as a part of the One Life community on Christmas Eve. Tanner has been skating around the neighborhood with his Heelies. Dakota has lost his first tooth and will be playing little league baseball this Spring. Chase had a great 5th birthday party with 18 preschoolers from his Messiah preschool class. He says he likes his new school and we find him most days riding around the playground in a helmet on a tricycle.

We have already made a number of treks to Lake Tahoe. Can I say, “Beautiful. Awesome. Breathtaking. Inspiring”?! We’ve gone sledding, skiing and snowmobiling. I am looking forward some time of solitude and silence in the Sierras and surrounding lakes and rivers. This adventure includes some amazing terrain both physically and spiritually.

We are indebted to so many of you who through prayer, spoken or written encouragement and financial support helped us through this season of transition. We already miss you. It has been the most difficult part of this journey to not share life together at the same level we have in the past. We will truly miss that. But, that does not mean we are to do life entirely separate either. Please write or call and give us an update. You can still find me on the web periodically via Podcast even. I do inconsistently keep a blog and have been able to write more than ever before. I was asked to write an article during Christmas for the local newspaper, the Lincoln News Messenger.

There is so much more to the story but I will leave it for another time or another blog.

Blessings,
Troy, Dawn and the three boys Dean

Lincoln Messenger

I recently was asked to write an article for the Lincoln Messenger, the local newspaper here. I asked a few creative friends what they would write abut during this time iof the year. I was inspired by my friend Anita and here's what I came up with:

“This is gonna be the worst Christmas ever.” I felt sad, like I just saw a dog get hit by a car. My 6-year-old son uttered those words. It was Christmas time last year and I had “tree issues.” I had found a good shaped tree at the lot at our local hardware giant (names left out to protect the innocent), only to discover later that the trunk of the tree was lopsided. The base was fine, but as you followed the trunk up the tree it took on an angle that would rival a playground slide. The crazy thing was that the tree looked nice, but the center was off. After I finally struggled to get it into the base, it would consistently and randomly fall over. So much so that I had to wedge metal brackets in between the tree and the capped screws that held it in place in its base. But, this tree was no ordinary tree. It was especially designed to take out small animals and even little children. Another problem was that I shot too low on its height. I was looking for a tree that would look nice at the taller end of our cathedral ceilings. But, I was way off. So I thought, “ Hey, I’ll put it on a box.” I thought it might help to show off the presents underneath as well. Now, I was really playing with danger. Not only did the tree fall over unexpectedly, but I have now put it up higher so that the blows to both ornaments and passers-by would be more devastating. Large trees, laden with glass and metal, being dropped on unsuspecting strangers. That was the reason my oldest son would say those words that broke my heart as his father. I wanted it all to be so perfect. What kind of parent puts his kid in harm’s way, at Christmas, even? It must have fallen over 4 or 5 different times on different folks and destroyed untold number of ornaments, both heirloom and nostalgic. Every time it fell (once almost taking out our youngest at 3 years of age), Tanner would say, “This is gonna be the worst Christmas ever.”

It reminded me of one of my favorite Christmas shows as a young boy. I always loved watching, "It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas.” If you can remember when you first saw Charlie Brown go his local tree lot to pick out a special Christmas tree for the school pageant. You probably have never forgotten the scrawny, little, and almost bare, tree that Charlie Brown bought. It could not even hold one ornament without being bent over all the way to the floor. Charlie got a lot of flack for choosing that tree and so did I. I felt a kinship with him.

It probably makes matters worse because I do love this season. The weather, the decorations, the spirit of generosity that is more evident, and the reason behind it all. I really want so much for it to be perfect. I hang the lights up so that they look like perfect icicles hanging from my eaves. We decorate the tree so that the delicate ratio of ornaments, to garland to tinsel is perfect. I want to get the perfect gift for each of my boys and especially my wife. I also want to have the perfect celebration dinner. But, in fact, I have never experienced that perfect Christmas. Every year during this holiday season, there is something that does not quite work out the way it’s supposed to in my mind. I get the wrong gift; break one of the plates of china that my grandmother collected; I cannot find which bulb is out so a portion of the string of lights hangs darkened for the holiday; or a tree falls on someone. Ever year it is a not-so-perfect Christmas.

I want my children to be in awe of the season when we celebrate the greatest gift given to people. And yet, when I reflect on that first Christmas, I see something that eases my mind and heart. You have a young couple in a not-so-perfect courting relationship. They are engaged and she gets pregnant, not by him. They travel far, only to get to their destination and find a “no vacancy” sign lit in the window of every hotel and motel throughout the town. Her water breaks and she ends up having the baby in a horse stable. They do not get a baby shower from their friends and relatives. They do not even have a blanket in which to wrap their newborn baby boy. I guess they had a not-so-perfect Christmas, too.

In wanting to have the perfect Christmas, my center was off. It is not in the perfect we find joy, peace, and love, but actually in the mess, mistakes, and mayhem of life. It is the real that makes life fulfilling, not the perfect. My wife and my kids now repeat my son’s phrase whenever something does not go quite right. It has become a moment of laughter and joy-making in our family. I can imagine when something goes wrong this year, and it will, we will all turn to one another and say, “This is gonna be the worst Christmas ever.” Charlie Brown had one. Mary, Joseph and Jesus experienced one. So, I do not know what your plans and expectations are for this holiday season, but, I wish you a not-so-perfect Christmas. May you be surprised by the joy and laughter revealed in the not so perfect, it is there where we will discover real joy, laughter and peace amidst all that life brings. May God’s blessings overflow in your hearts this holiday season!
